Fitting in exercise on the road

5 Exercises
On The GoWhile taking summer beach vacations, traveling for work and visiting Aunt Matilda for the holidays, getting in a good workout can seem next to impossible with not a gym in site. This doesn’t mean that your exercise routine has to go by the wayside. Scott Keppel, certified fitness instructor and president/CEO of Scott’s Training Systems in Arizona, recommends this 30-minute total body workout to maintain fitness but still have time to enjoy yourself while away from home.

The beauty of this routine is that it requires no special equipment -- just a good pair of training shoes. To make the most of your workout away from home, Scott says, "Clear out an area with enough space, and eliminate distractions by turning off your cell phone and the television."

your away-from-home fitness routine

Start with a 10-minute warmup: Do jumping jacks, go for a jog, or walk up and down a staircase.

Squat jumps:

While standing with feet hip-width apart, bend knees while pushing buttocks back, keeping your knees in line with your feet. On the way back to standing, jump into the air quickly. Upon landing, go right back into the squat position. Continue and repeat.

Pelvic raises:

While squeezing your glutes, lie on your back on the floor with feet flat on low bed, chair or floor, and knees bent. Raise your hips until they are in line with your thighs and torso. Return back to starting position and repeat.

Chair dips:

Sit on a chair with palms grasping the edge of the seat. Walk your legs out until your knees are above your feet. Dip down by bending your elbows until the arms are at a 90-degree angle. Push back up and repeat.

Bent-over rear delts:

Standing and holding a full water bottle in each hand, bend from the waist until your torso is at a 60- to 90-degree angle. Start with your arms hanging, and then raise both arms straight out. (Use at least a 20-ounce water bottle. The larger the size, the harder the workout.)

Pilates abs:

Lie on the floor on your back with legs extended and hands pointed up toward the ceiling, above chest. Sit up all the way without moving legs and reach into a toe touch.

For each exercise, do timed repetitions of 20 seconds and then 10 seconds resting. Do three to five sets of this for each exercise in a row. Perform this regimen three times per week while away from home, and add in two days of a 30- to 45-minute cardiovascular exercise, such as walking or running.

How to stock your pantry for the end of the world

Food Items You Need... Just In Case As we ring in 2012, we can't forget that the world is supposed to end! While we don't really believe that, this whole the-world-is-ending thing got us thinking: What do we need in our pantries to be prepared?

Woman buying canned peas

Dec. 21, 2012 -- the day the world is supposed to end. We may be jumping the gun a little, but you can never be too prepared, right? Also, we realize that the end of the world means these things probably won't be necessary, but we live by the Boy Scout motto. If you want to have a properly stocked pantry for this life-altering (literally) event, keep reading.

Canned goods

Recent studies about the levels of BPA in canned goods might have you concerned, but what's a little BPA when the world is ending? You can never have too many canned goods in the event of an emergency.

Tuna: Packed with protein, this canned fish is low in fat, too! Tuna is also a great source of omega-3 fatty acids.Canned vegetables: Granted, frozen veggies are much better if you're watching your salt intake, but you're likely to lose power as the world ends and nobody likes spoiled, previously-frozen food. Canned is the way to go.Canned fruit: We know fresh fruit is preferable, but when the grocery stores are pillaged and there's not an apple to be found, you'll be glad to have these canned alternatives at the ready. Other non-perishables

Canned isn't the only way to go. There are plenty of other food items you can stock up on that won't go bad. Who wants to live off of nothing but tuna as the world ends? Not us.

Nuts: Almonds, cashews, walnuts, pecans and more -- nuts are packed with fiber, protein and healthy fat.Cereal: You may not be able to have your Cheerios with a side of milk, but dry cereal is better than no cereal. And under the circumstances, we won't judge you for indulging in your favorite dessert-style breakfast food. Who's counting the grams of sugar at a time like this? Crackers: Bread grows mold after a week or two, but a few packages of crackers can last a long time. Plus, you'll need something to go with that tuna!Booze and/or wine

Be honest. If the world's about to end, a nice cocktail or glass of wine might make it a little more bearable. If you don't drink, you can skip the alcoholic beverages. However, if you do indulge sometimes, what better time than the end of the world? If you're particularly morbid, you can toast the occasion with a glass of Champagne. Don't forget the mixers! Tonic is vodka's best friend and a bottle of the unopened fizzy stuff will last for a long time.

Essentials

Don't forget the water! We're not listing it last because it's not important. You can live, um, forever without booze, but only three days without water. Also, make sure to have a can opener. As much fun as it might seem to open cans of tuna with your teeth, we're guessing there aren't very many dentists working as the world ends.

Frosty place setting ideas for summer parties

Cool Summer Table IdeasSummer parties bring images of outdoor settings, chilled foods and icy drinks and desserts. Why not let your table setting reflect this easy, breezy feeling with brightly colored and frosty-toned place settings? Here are some fresh ideas on how to set a summer party table that is sure to reflect that summery feeling.

outdoor table setting in white

Cool cobalt blue

Nothing says cool and frosty like rich glass cobalt blue dishes accented with clear glass or white dishes. Place a larger cobalt plate or charger down first and a smaller clear plate on top of that with a cobalt cloth napkin folded in the center of the plate. Place your table settings on a snow-white tablecloth and arrange your best silverware. Cobalt blue stemware for wine or drinks alongside clear glasses for water or soda will be the perfect combination. Line the middle of the table with small, clear glass votive holders and see how the candles' glow reflects off the cobalt and clear glass for a deliciously frosty look.

Brighten with yellow and white

Yellow is the color of the summer sun, lemons and sunflowers, so why not bring those themes together for a cool summer table setting? Heavy, bright yellow Fiestaware paired with bright white dishes will certainly add pop to any summer get-together. Set the dishes on top of a soft yellow tablecloth and use same-color napkins. White enamel-handled silverware will complete the look. Place glass vases of sunflowers down the center of the table along with fresh lemons in bowls or simply placed on the table. Clear stemware and glasses will reflect the colors for a crisp and cool summer table.

Chill things down with white

We all wait for the summer temps to arrive so we can toss away our dark colors and replace them with crisp, cool white. Why not do the same with your summer party table setting? Bring out the shiny, white china, good silverware and clear glass stemware and drinking glasses. Serve foods in white or clear glass to keep the table setting light and airy. Cover the table with a silky white tablecloth and, for a pop of color, place a yellow, deep blue or green table runner down the middle and match napkins to the runner. Decorate the center by alternating white candles with clear vases holding white summer flowers. Your guests will feel ten degrees cooler, just looking at your table!

Ocean blue and white

Everyone heads to the ocean on a hot summer day for those cool breezes and blue waters, and you can give your guests the same feeling by decorating your party table in the cooling colors of the ocean. Start with a soft blue tablecloth and top with ocean-blue and white plates. Add white napkins under your silverware and use clear stemware and drinking glasses. Decorate the center of the table with starfish, seashells and hurricane lamps holding light blue or white candles. The table will feel cool and serene, perfect for an intimate summer dinner party with friends.

15 Trendy new foods to try now

Get Ahead Of The TrendEveryone has that friend — the one who's always on top of the latest food trends. Don’t wait for her to put you onto the latest craze. Try these 15 super foods now.

Super foods aren't a new concept — in fact, though some are exotic fruits from the other side of the world, many super foods are things that have been stocked on grocery store shelves for years. What's changed is what we know about how these foods affect our bodies. This week, make sure you put at least a few of these on your shopping list. Some of them might surprise you!

CupucaçuCupuaçu

This is the one you'll want to name-drop to that food-fad-fiend friend you have. Cupuaçu is the next big thing in "unusual" super foods. Related to the Amazonian cacao, this antioxidant-packed fruit has a creamy flesh and tastes like pear with a bit of banana.

Olive oil may be all the rage, but safflower oil deserves a high-five, too. Cooking with this pleasantly-named oil increases lean muscle, reduces belly fat and stabilizes blood sugar.

Black garlicBlack garlic

Black garlic is just regular garlic that's been fermented for a month. Now, hear us out. It's actually really tasty. It's a bit sweeter and softer than its fresh counterpart and, you guessed it, turns black. Better yet, it's got twice as much antioxidant power and (bonus!) won't give you the dreaded garlic breath.

Black beansBlack beans

When it comes to food, black must be the new black. Black beans are chock-full of fiber, which fights diabetes, and magnesium, which helps your body absorb calcium and boosts your immune system. They actually have 10 times the amount of antioxidants as your average tomato. (Remember, fresh is best, but if you use canned black beans, rinse them first.)

Chia seedsChia seeds

Cha-cha-cha-chia! That's right, those tiny seeds you've bought to grow plants that mimic crazy-haired animals are actually really good for you. They have more heart-healthy and brain-power-boosting omega-3s than flaxseeds! They'll also help reduce blood pressure and inflammation, lowering your risk for heart disease. And. just like the flaxseed, they're a great addition to shakes and smoothies.

RicottaRicotta

No one thinks of lasagna as a particularly healthy food, but it turns out, if you watch the other fat content, pack it with veggies and use whole-wheat or spinach pasta, it's actually not only pretty good for you, it's the perfect vehicle for one of the best cheeses you can eat. Ricotta, especially if you choose the part-skim variety, has up to 25 percent of your daily intake for calcium, which as we all know, helps with burning that post-dinner fat.

SkyrSkyr

Maybe you've never heard of skyr, but you'll be glad you did. It's a soft cheese from Iceland that has the consistency of a yogurt. It's nice and creamy and, in its nonfat version, still provides more protein that Greek or traditional yogurt.

You know that unusual smell these tiny cabbage-looking veggies have? That's the scent of fighting cancer. Allyl isothiocyanate actually causes precancerous cells to self-destruct. They're also packed with fiber and vitamins A and C. If you aren't a fan of Brussels sprouts, try roasting them in a little safflower oil, salt and pepper to bring out their sweetness and serve them up with a bit of ricotta.

CurryCurry

Curry gets its distinct color from curcumin, a powerful antioxidant that halts tumor growth and has actually destroyed cancer cells in a lab test. In addition to its cancer-fighting prowess, it's also possible it may break up the plaque that causes Alzheimer's disease, according to scientists at UCLA.

KefirKefir

Full of both protein and calcium, kefir is a creamy drink that is loaded with probiotics to help you maintain a healthy digestive system. It can be used in place of sour cream on Mexican food or on top of your baked potato or as an ingredient in smoothies instead of yogurt (which has less protein and more sugar). It also makes a great addition to marinades and can be used in salad dressings in place of buttermilk.

RaspberriesRaspberries

With more fiber than blueberries and, in frozen form, double the vitamin C of their azure-colored counterparts, raspberries are a superior source of ellagic acid, which is thought to inhibit the formation of cancer cells.

BaobabBaobab

From the outside, the latest super fruit is a bit like a coconut. But when you break it open, the dry and somewhat powdery flesh is full of various antioxidants (10 times more than oranges), vitamin C (six times more than oranges) and calcium (double that of a glass of milk).

While this theory is still being tested on animals, at the University of Michigan, they've shown that animals who take a small dose of a powdered version of tart cherries have lower cholesterol and blood sugar in addition to storing less fat in the liver. Cross your fingers the same holds true in human studies!

TeffTeff

This African export is a whole grain that tastes sweet, similar to molasses. It's really versatile, too. It can be used in breads, in place of oatmeal, or made into a polenta-like meal. It's got twice the iron of most other grains and as much as three times more calcium.

BeetsBeets

If you're pregnant or planning to get pregnant, it's time to start loving beets. They're a great source of folate, which protects agains birth defects. The green leaves of beets, which can be cooked much like spinach or collard greens or just tossed in a salad, also contain lutein and zeaxanthin, which are great for your eyesight. It's also believed they relieve inflammation and help rid your body of the dangerous affects of carcinogens.

Fit to be tied with a battle rope workout

Woman exercising with ropeGet roped into this workout!

Cardio and strength training are tied up in this workout. Battle ropes, sometimes called power ropes, are growing in popularity as a fun, challenging workout.

Ready to feel like you could keep up with hearty sailors or maybe even Popeye? Once you start a workout with battle ropes, you just might be able to!

Know the ropes

Maybe you’ve seen an episode of The Biggest Loser where contestants work out with the ropes, or photos of pro athletes using them to condition their super-fit physiques. You’d know them if you saw them: two thick, 15-foot ropes 1-1/2 to 2 inches thick that weigh about 20 pounds each (though weight can vary). It looks like a tough workout and it’s what NFL players, martial arts fighters and fitness fanatics have been using to get their heart rates up and work their muscles in different ways than traditional weights would.

Where to find battle ropes

Keep your eyes open the next time you’re at the gym, since they’re starting to pop up in mainstream fitness centers and at boot-camp groups. You can use many different workouts with the ropes, like waving them up and down alternately or together, slamming them down quickly or making crisscross motions. They can also be done as part of a circuit session (lunges and squats can also be incorporated into the moves). It’s usually high-intensity interval training, done in short but intense bursts, followed by a rest period.

Benefits of a battle rope workout

The ropes are good for people of all fitness levels, since workouts are adaptable, and they are considered low impact. Your entire body is engaged when you’re working with the ropes, but it’s especially good for your core. Additional benefits of a battle rope workout:

It’s a great high-impact cardio workout. It’s super for strength training (upper and lower body and core). It combines strength, speed and endurance. It helps with practical performance, like playing with your kids or participating in sports.

If your current workout could use a little something extra, consider a battle rope workout. You’ll be fit to be tied -- in a good way!
